Hash is what happens when you separate those trichomes from everything else and collect them. That's it. The plant, refined down to the part worth keeping.
The difference between hash and modern concentrates like wax, shatter, or carts is how that separation happens. Most concentrates use a solvent — butane, propane, or CO₂ — to pull the resin from the plant. Solventless hash uses only ice, water, and mechanical agitation. Nothing added. Nothing hidden. Nothing removed except the plant material that doesn't belong.

What you end up with is a concentrated expression of the plant — the aroma and flavor compounds (terpenes) preserved intact, no solvent, nothing added — the cannabinoids at full potency. A good jar of solventless hash smells like someone smashed open the most beautiful bud you've ever encountered and captured that moment in a jar.

The process starts long before anyone touches a bag of ice. The cultivar — the specific genetics — sets the ceiling on what the final product can be. A hash maker can do everything right and still make mediocre hash from a cultivar with weak resin production. Starting material is everything.
Once the plant is harvested at peak expression, it's frozen within the hour — whole plant, fresh frozen. This locks in the volatile aroma compounds that would otherwise evaporate during a normal dry-and-cure. That frozen starting material goes directly into the wash.
Genetics chosen specifically for resin production — not yield, not bag appeal. The cultivar sets the ceiling. A weak starting material cannot be corrected downstream.
Cut at peak trichome maturity, frozen within the hour. This preserves the volatile terpenes that a standard dry-and-cure would destroy. The plant goes from field to frozen without ever sitting out to dry.
Frozen plant material is submerged in ice water and gently agitated. The cold makes the trichome necks brittle — they snap cleanly from the plant with minimal agitation. That trichome-rich water is then poured through a series of fine mesh bags, each catching a different size class of trichome heads. This is the wash.
The collected trichomes — now called bubble hash — are sealed in glass and aged in the dark at 2°C for weeks. During this time the texture transforms from a loose powder to a creamy, workable consistency. The aroma deepens and integrates. This is called cold curing.
Cold cured hash is pressed between heated plates at low temperature and low pressure. The resin oil flows out and is collected as live rosin. Jarred the day it's pressed. Dated on the lid. That date is the story.

When you see something like "73–119µ" on a Hash Snob jar, you're reading the micron range — the mesh sizes used to collect the trichomes. A micron (µm) is a millionth of a meter. The mesh bags in a wash are sized to catch different-sized trichome heads.
This matters because different cultivars express their best resin at different size ranges. The 73–90µ bags often catch the most potent, flavorful heads — what the community calls "the money bag." The 220µ bag at the top catches ice, stems, and plant debris that gets discarded.
But the real quality signal isn't the micron range. It's how the hash melts.

The star rating system (1–6 stars) grades hash on how completely it melts when you dab it:
1–2 stars: High plant-material content. Leaves residue when dabbed. Best used in edibles or cooking — hence "edible grade."
3–4 stars (half-melt): Partially melts, some residue. Often pressed into rosin before selling. Good yield, not ideal for direct dabbing.
5–6 stars (full melt): Bubbles and disappears completely. No char, no residue. The gold standard. Typically 60–80% cannabinoid content. This is what you dab directly.
A six-star hash on a dab tool should look like it evaporates. If it leaves anything in the bowl, it's not six-star.
